Chosen - Fragment (Piece I)

From Ireland comes CHOSEN, a five-piece band that’s difficult to categorize, but is best described as playing a heavy-handed version of Progressive Metal. On the band’s debut release, “Fragment (Piece I)”, I hear bits of other hard to categorize bands, such as COMMUNIC and NEVERMORE.

The album begins with the heaviest and strongest track, “Your Religion”, featuring entirely growled vocals. The growling is all but abandoned on the album’s remaining three tracks, which is certainly unfortunate, as the clean singing is not nearly as well performed. The musicianship is certainly strong and the songwriting is adequate, but the singing leaves a lot to be desired.

CHOSEN’s “Fragment (Piece I)” is not bad, but isn’t great either, mainly because of the vocals. The vocalist would do the band a favor by sticking to the growls. If CHOSEN insists on having cleanly sung vocals, the band would do themselves a favor by finding a second singer. (Online March 30, 2006)
