Andy Timmons Band - Resolution

What’s refreshing about ANDY TIMMONS BAND latest release ‘’Resolution’’ is the sheer simplicity. One guitar, drum and bass is all you get throughout. No computerised Pro-Tool interference no fills or indeed frills as the respected ex-DANGER DANGER guitarist puts his much vaunted six-string talent to the test on his eighth solo album.

So guitar instrumental albums might not be flavour of the month these days but there is a simple beauty to this album that preludes any cursory comments or derisory put downs. Although comparisons with Satriani will be de rigueur Timmons has enough savvy class and song writing ability to stand as an equal along side the great man himself. More than ably assisted by bassist Mike Deane and drummer Mitch Marine it would be criminal not to like the explosive riff fuelled ‘’Redemption’’ or the irrepressibly catchy ‘’Helipad’’

Managing not to confine himself to just ‘’Rock’’ songs Timmons branches out on the Jazzy crossover of ‘’Lydia’’ and ‘’Gone’’ – a fitting testimony to the victims of 9/11 but returns to old habits on the electrifying sun-roof down ‘’Move On’’

I fully expected yet another archetypal instrumental album that bordered on the side of contempt regarding the skill of the guitarist. However Timmons sublime and at times understated playing is joy to listen to and marks ‘’Resolution’’ as a stand out instrumental album. And you don’t hear that very often. (Online June 12, 2006)
