Kataklysm - Shadows And Dust
The Northern Hyperblast has returned! After the pulverising "Epic (The Poetry Of War)" the Canadian blasters of KATAKLYSM return with their newest warmachine, "Shadows & Dust". And the initial response to the album has been more than overwhelming, often averaging a grade between 9 and 10.

Fairly soon after the previous album (released in 2001), record number 6 of KATAKLYSM sees the light, recorded by guitar player Jean-Francois Dagenais in Victor Studio, Montreal. The band claims they are creators of the so-called Hyperblasts, rapid chains of snare drumming, unleashing a march of destruction upon the listener. Enough of those can be found amongst the "Shadows & Dust" on this album, along with the conventional double bass play and other Death Metal drum combinations. Vocalist Maurizio Iacono displays the widest range in his vocals to date, going from deep grunts to high-pitched screams.

The brutality of the Canadian group is enforced by the smashing guitars of Jean-Francois Dagenais and the excellent bassplay of Stephane Barbe, but mostly comes forth through these mentioned Hyperblasts. Imagine an entire tank division rolling over your sorry body to get an idea of the crushing this album stands for. Expect a pounding from "In Shadows & Dust", "Illuminati" and "Chronicles Of The Damned", while on songs like "Where The Enemy Sleeps" and "Face The Face Of War" KATAKLYSM proves that speed is not always the main ingredient for sounding brutal. The album ends with a bang called "Years Of Enlightment/ Decades In Darkness".

"Shadows & Dust" proves KATAKLYSM is right in the top of the Brutal Death Metal scene. And with their upcoming North American tour, and as participants of the European X-Mas Metalfest tours, it's time for the Metal world to start realising just that! The overwhelming response seems totally justified, KATAKLYSM is killer! (Online November 19, 2002)
