Boney Nem - The Very Best Of Greatest Hits
BONEY NEM are something like a legend in the Russian Metal scene. Why? Well, their specialty is cover versions metalized, with mostly very gruff vocals and the special thing about this quintet is the fact that most of the cover versions are non-Metal or even non-Rock, but many of them are taken from the Eighties and early Nineties Pop, some even from the traditional French chansons, which makes them even more fun to listen to, because most of the songs you know from radio anyway.

Now I find that reviews about CDs like this are extremely hard to write, because on the one hand you feel inclined to give a little not about every song, but then again it would be easier (and less time consuming for both writer and reader) to more generalize things, even though that is very hard again, because of the variety of tunes that have been processed in this CD. So you see, I am in kind of a lose-lose situation and hope that I will still be able to give you at least some insight on why BONEY NEM are so funny and cool.

The opener "It's My Life". Originally by Captain Hollywood, I think. Great Metal version with harsh Death Metal vocals and the almost original female choir in the back in the chorus. Or take the following "Felicita", in the original by Al Bano & Romina Power, with double bass and the harsh voice of Kirill Nemolyev over the sweet female backing vocals and the just as sweet keyboard melodies, I love it! Or the Seventies whiner "L'Ete Indien", cool! And "Voyage, Voyage" is just brilliant! Oh, and "And I Love Her", originally is by the BEATLES, with the verse sung in German!

And it continues in that vein, ploughing through French chanson, European Pop, some Russian songs, too, all showing clearly that these guys, with all great musicianship, do not take themselves seriously and just rock away with these songs. As the title indicates, this is a best of compilation, so you know that there is even more out there :) The only thing that most probably could put people off is Kirill's at times very harsh voice (which results in a certain deduction of the overall rating, but that is made up by a bonus for the so very entertaining covers), which takes away a bit of the magic of these songs, but if you can live with this, BONEY NEM should be great for the next party!
