This is a rather weird IRON MAIDEN record to me. When the other albums I've heard from them ("Number Of The Beast", "Powerslave" and "Brave New World") contain 2-3 songs that I REALLY love, and the rest just do nothing for me, this is probably the only IRON MAIDEN release out there that can hold my attention all the way through.
I doubt you'll need any introduction of the band or their importance to the Metal world, so I'll just get on to the music.
Although this album contains every one of IRON MAIDEN's signature song writing characteristics (Bruce's vocals, twin guitar harmonies, duelling solos, driving bass lines, etc.), the introduction of guitar synthesizers, giving the entire album an atmosphere and cohesiveness. This release being a concept (story) album, it gives the album value on its whole instead of each individual part.
Each song can also stand on its own, which is rare for a concept album. So you get 8 individually crafted pieces of GENIUS songwriting, made even better when you realize they all fit together perfectly.
One under-rated album. (Online September 6, 2003)
