Frequently it seems that whenever you hear a lot about a Death Metal band, it means they aren't any damn good. I had been hearing about this band a lot and I had never heard anything to really get me excited. But on a friend's recommendation I picked this up and I was really impressed with the quality of this band. This was release number four for these guys and it's a fine album all around.
Musically GOD DETHRONED are not breaking any new ground. They have a pretty standard Death Metal sound here, but they do it well. I like the fact that there is no useless "Intro" track - they just fire up the cool riffage and go. The first three songs are the coolest ones on the disc - except for "Iconoclast Deathride", which has a massively cool riff. But all the songs here are listenable, with some nice Gothenburg-style guitar leads and twin-axe harmonies to keep things from getting too brutal and monotonous. A cool thing about GOD DETHRONED is that they write pretty good lyrics that actually have metre and rhyme, which adds a degree of catchiness to the vocals that a lot of Death bands miss these days.
This is definitely in the melodic Death Metal category, but done with a kind of evil and fury usually reserved for Florida bands. GOD DETHRONED rate high as a second-tier Death Metal band. They don't have the originality of a band like NILE, but they are very good at what they do and any of their releases makes a fine addition to the Death Metal CD collection.
