Most of the time, experimentation sucks. In this case, it sucks a lot. Brilliant was their debut "Les Blessures de l'Ame," good was their second, "L'Excellence," crap is their third, "Divine-X." This French band has gone from a straightforward Black Metal band to something Thrashy/Black/Death and a generic disappointment.
While a more bombastic sound works with other bands, it simply doesn't cut it here. The drums sound so soft and fluffy, the vocals are weak, and the groovy-but-electronic/futuristic-sounding guitars are pretty annoying. The only positives I can extract from this listening experience are the very few lead guitar solos and riffs that would've worked better in the crowded Swedish melodic Death Metal scene.
For example, the riffs on "The Sons Of Seth" and the title track will be crowd-pleasers in concert, as is the lead guitar solo on the fag-ly named "Addicted To Psychotronic Angel." The rest of the songs are aggressive and vary in speed, but lack the authority and contempt that the band has shown in previous releases.
And the experimental futuristic keyboard insertions are just plain irritating. While "Divine-X" is not total crap, it smells like it. You taste it! (Online January 07, 2003)
