TÝR was formed in January 1998 by Faroe Islanders living in Copenhagen. In sound the style is based on BLACK SABBATH, DREAM THEATER and METALLICA but in melody and harmony it is based on Faroese and Scandinavian folk music, with a touch of classical. The style is referred to by reviewers as Prog-ish Epic Doom/Power Folk/Viking Metal.
TÝR had their Faroese breakthrough in April 2001 when they participated in the Prix Fřroyar contest. "Ormurin Langi" was the greatest Faroese hit ever in the Faroes. Early 2002, the same song hit bigtime in Iceland and paved the way for TÝR's popularity there.
In 2002, TÝR played 30 concerts in 5 different countries, Denmark, Iceland, Faroes, Norway and Latvia. With a total breakthrough in Iceland and the Faroes. This year, TÝR have been at the Jomsborg Viking Festival in Poland and they will journey in Scandinavia and Russia later this year.
TÝR's debut album "How Far To Asgaard" is released in Iceland, Faroes, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Polen, United Kingdom, Russia, CIS, the Baltics, Germany, Canada and USA. "How Far To Asgaard" has received good reviews from all over the world and TÝR is played on underground radio in New York, Moskva, Warszawa and Lissabon.
On June 25, TÝR released their second album "Eric The Red" which will bring TÝR further on their journey through Midgaard. Many ballads are reborn on this album. Critics praise "Eric The Red" as the potential breakthrough for TÝR.
"Eric The Red" was reviewed in Heavy Oder Was! By Oliver Weinsheimer and got 10 out of 10 possible points, also reviewed in Obliveon Magazine by Christoph Lücker, in Urkraft Magazine by Fróđi Stenberg and in Reflections of Doom by Jean-Marie Mathues.
TÝR are invited to play at Headbangers Open Air Festival 2004 in Brande, Germany.
