Tuesday was truly the toppling of a figure of monolithic influence in all modern gaming. Gary Gygax, the co-creator of DnD and the person responsible for such gaming mainstays as Exp, Hp, Classes, Levels, and Ability Points had been in declining health for several years, and last tuesday, he finally failed his Fortitude Save.
Gygax was a lover of the team-oriented immersive roleplaying elements of DnD and has criticised its recent incarnations as being too focused on creating god-like individual characters. Perhaps, then, it's better that he didn't live to see what will surely be a bastardisation of his fine work when Wizards of the Coast releases DnD 4e.
